Today it’s actually believed that anything society once thought to be absolutely true, such as the fact that homosexuality is a sin; is now disputed, or even false because modern morality is “enlightened” and “evolved.” In other words, thousands—and even hundreds of thousands of years—of human civilization has been wrong about basic sexual morality, and we suddenly got it right. According to contemporary logic; the things we were taught by our parents to be matters of foundational truth, like the Ten Commandments and faith in God, are actually meaningless cultural traditions created by greedy liars to oppress the unsuspecting masses for profit. So, when government takes earnings from one segment of the population to give to another segment, it’s not immoral, its “social justice!” The notion that human truth has less to do with corresponding facts than with human perception, has lent itself to theological apostates who teach that what’s “felt” about Scripture is more important that what it actually says. Again, let me explain: Paul reminds his readers in v.4 that Jesus Himself had said that, “everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected.” Yet, some of his Ephesian critics were insisting that Timothy and the disciples refrain from eating certain foods as a means of ensuring their salvation. Paul says that these teachings exposed these teachers as apostates, led by “spirits and things taught by demons,” not things taught by God.
“Such teachings,” Paul says in Ephesians 4:2, “come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.”
“These liars have lied so well and for so long that they’ve lost their capacity for truth,” says the Message translation. The Ephesian church had been warned about false teachers before, when in Acts 20:29 Paul had warned them that “savage wolves will come in among you…So be on your guard!” Throughout his letters, Paul had alerted Christian congregations that apostate teachers would expose themselves as frauds by falling away from biblical truth. These folks are fond of teaching things that they themselves don’t practice. The clear indication here is that apostates are anything but genuine and their behavior betrays the truth that calls into question God’s ability to save repentant sinners.
